We had conducted an interview session with Niall Murphy in interaction with Dr. Niladri Choudhuri on July 1. The discussion points covered - Niall Murphy’s journey; what is SRE according to him; how is SRE in Microsoft and how well it is implemented; how should people prepare themselves for the SRE role; how is Microsoft Azure used by SRE; what are the challenges of SRE!

Niall Murphy is the Global Head of Azure SRE at Microsoft and the local head of Production Infrastructure Engineering in Microsoft’s Dublin, Ireland office, from which he leads teams across the world looking after critical subcomponents of the Azure cloud. Prior to Microsoft, he led Ads Reliability Engineering in the Google Dublin office as well as Customer Reliability Engineering, where he worked on SRE outreach within the Cloud organization.

Niall Murphy is the author/co-author of IPv6 Network Administration, The History of the Irish Internet, the award-winning and industry-enabling Site Reliability Engineering (a.k.a. "The SRE Book"), its successor volume, The Site Reliability Workbook, and numerous articles, papers, and RFCs.
